Pediatric Primer: Sensory Integration

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder is identified as 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in189 girls). 1 in 20 school aged children are diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). With these staggering statistics, every clinician or professional will be exposed to clients with this disorder sometime during their career. Parents are being given the news every day. Without an in-depth understanding of SPD, therapists are not able to provide appropriate treatment, educate family and other professionals, or understand the impact this disorder has on the whole family.

In this course you will learn valuable information to educate family, set goals, answer common questions fromparents or others, plan excellent treatment sessions, provide home programs, and fully understand the impact that sensory processing disorder is having on our society. Case studies will provide an opportunity to read actual sensory profiles and clinical observations, and turn them into measurable goals and treatment sessions. Upon completion of this course attendees will be able to understand the basics of sensory processing disorder in relation to behavior, feeding, classroom adaptations, reaching milestones, and addressing non sensory goals. Attendees will be able to explain sensory processing disorder in everyday terms and understand why people "act that way".

The content of this program is germane to children, students and clients birth - 18, with emphasis on ages up to12.
