Transition to Adulthood for Students with Developmental Disabilities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 17% of school aged children are affected by a developmental disability. While transition goals must be added in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) by high school, the steps to prepare students for transition to adulthood need to start much earlier. Therapists must be able to define their distinct value in addressing student needs in collaboration with the teaching staff. This will allow for an interprofessional approach early on to yield the greatest success for students at the time of transition. This course will provide therapists and educators with collaborative models and methods for immediately integrating therapy services into classrooms. Templates for assessing and developinginterprofessional initiatives will be provided.
