Effective Home Modifications for Older Adults with Cognitive Decline

Dementia as well as cognitive decline related to other conditions affect over 6 million older adults within the United States, significantly impacting safety, independence, caregiver burden, and the ability to age in place. Environmental barriers within the home contribute to falls, decreased ability to participate in ADLs/IADLs, functional decline, and often institutionalization. Without practical home modifications, clinicians risk neglecting a critical interventionthat may directly influence safety and quality of life.

This workshop will provide rehabilitation clinicians withevidence-based, interdisciplinary strategies for assessing and modifying home environments for older adults with cognitive decline. Participants will learn how to identify environmental risks and apply home modification strategies to supportcognitive function as well as improve safety, participation,and independence. Imbedded case-studies will support immediate generalization into clinical practice across a variety of settings.
