Additional Information

In March 2023, a survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report gathered insights from 2,000 U.S. adults aged 55 and above regarding their utilization of assistive technologies within their homes and their intentions for utilizing these devices to facilitate aging in place. A significant majority of participants (93%) expressed alignment with the concept of aging in place, as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasizing the importance of residing safely, independently, and comfortably in their own homes and communities, regardless of age, income, or abilitylevel. For elderly individuals who wish to remain in their own homes as they age, the decision to either modify their current residence for safety or to move to a smaller, low-maintenance home with fewer obstacles to mobility can be pivotal. Successfully aging in place necessitates meticulous planning, as well as the presence of a caregiver, a supportive social network, and anticipation of potential health challenges down the line, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline.

How Technology Can Enhance Older Adults Independence and Safety will examine the role of therapy services in incorporating technology as part of the senior's plan of care to maximize one's independence. This course will provide the framework to help guide the clinician to educate the senior on assistive technology solutions as well as expand their knowledge of new and upcomingclient-centered interventions.
