The ability to differentiate between edema and lymphedema is a critical skill for therapists working across a variety of clinical settings. Both conditions present with swelling yet require distinctly different approaches for effective management. This course equips clinicians with theclinical tools to identify the underlying pathophysiology, recognize red flags, effectively educate patients and determine when conservative management is appropriate versus when specialized referral is warranted.
This course will review the pathophysiology of lymphedema development, provide research-based treatment interventions, and empower clinicians to confidently refer to certified lymphedema therapists when appropriate. Afterattending, the clinician will be able to distinguish edema versus lymphedema, effectively implement appropriate interventions including disease education and understand when and where to refer patients beyond their scope.
Target Audience: Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Speech-Language Pathologists, Athletic Trainers
