Patellar instability in the youth athlete can be challenging to manage due to the combination of anatomical, developmental, and sport-specific factors that influence treatment and recurrence risk. When treating this population, clinicians must understand the unique considerations associated with skeletal maturity, recurrent instability, and surgical versus non-operative management to provide evidence-based care. This course will review relevant anatomy, risk factors, and clinical considerations associated with patellar instability and how these factors influence rehabilitation decision-making. Attendees will discuss evidence-based non-operative rehabilitation strategies for patellar instability before progressing into an in-depth discussion of rehabilitation following medial patellofemoralligament reconstruction. Attendees will review the evidence behind physical therapy management across the fullcontinuum of care, with an emphasis on criterion-based rehabilitation progression and return-to-sport decision-making. At the end of this course, attendees will have improvedtreatment progression skills and criterion-based knowledge they can immediately apply when treating youth athletes withpatellar instability and following MPFL reconstruction.
