An Introduction to Lower Extremity Prosthetics and Rehabilitation

This course examines the essential role of physical and occupational therapy in the rehabilitation of individuals using lower extremity prostheses. The course emphasizes understanding prosthetic components, alignment principles, and the biomechanics of walking with various lower limbprostheses. Participants will analyze gait deviations, implement evidence-based interventions, and develop personalized rehabilitation programs that restore strength, balance, and confidence.

A key focus is the collaboration between the physical andoccupational therapist and the prosthetist. While the prosthetist designs, fabricates, and adjusts the prosthesis for optimal comfort and function, the physical therapist helps the patient learn to use the device effectively — ensuringproper movement patterns, endurance, and safety. Together, they form an essential partnership that supports successful mobility and long-term adaptation.
