Additional Information

As people age, staying physically active and mentally engaged becomes increasingly important for maintaining independence and overall well-being. Participating in regular physical activities and cognitively stimulating tasks can significantly enhance the quality of life for older adults, helping them retain functional independence and cognitive health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults should aim to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week. Research indicates that older adults who maintain regular physical activity experience a 31% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who remain inactive. Additionally, physical activity can mitigate the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis, while also improving balance and reducing the likelihood of falls.

In addition, keeping the brain active through various intellectual activities is equally important for maintainingcognitive health. Activities such as puzzles, games, learning new skills, and social engagement can help enhancememory, problem-solving abilities, and overall mental function. A study by the Global Council on Brain Health found that incorporating cognitively stimulating activities into daily routines can significantly improve brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

This course explores how functional tasks—real-lifeactivities that engage motor, cognitive, and communication skills—enhance independence in individuals receiving occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT). Through an interdisciplinary approach, participants will learn strategies for integrating functional tasks into therapy plans toimprove patient outcomes.
